College, AP and IB Psychology

Shared topics do not establish equivalent courses. Compare what students are expected to do and how that work is judged.

Compare the frameworks

The table describes official provision checked October 23, 2026. College examples vary by institution; AP and IB specify qualification frameworks. University credit or placement requires a separate institutional decision.

What AP assessment asks for

The current exam page specifies 75 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, worth 66.7%, and two free-response questions in 70 minutes, worth 33.3%. The Article Analysis Question works from one summarized study. The Evidence-Based Question asks students to support an argument using three summarized sources.

Read the current Course and Exam Description and released scoring commentary when designing practice. A terminology list alone does not prepare students to justify an inference.

Keep the two IB cycles separate

The new curriculum began teaching in August 2025, with first assessment in May 2027. The outgoing course has its last assessment in 2026. Record the cohort before selecting teaching and assessment guidance.

For the new course, SL external papers contribute 70% and the research-proposal IA 30%; HL external papers contribute 80% and the IA 20%. The new IA asks students to justify a proposed study. They are not expected to conduct that proposed research. Class practicals are a separate part of the course.

How university courses differ

The UBC syllabus reviewed here places three in-person tests alongside discussion posts, reading quizzes and research experience. The archived MIT course gives substantial weight to exams and papers. Yale’s current catalog describes course scope but does not give grading weights. These sources should not be treated as interchangeable.

Course duration, entry preparation, cohort size, language, program purpose and local credit rules can change what is reasonable to require. The “college” or “university” label alone does not specify difficulty.
